About Us

Cavalier Domenico Antonelli came to the UK in 1884. A cabinet maker by trade he set up business making barrel pianos. With the advent of radio and cinema, the demand for street music was in decline, so he set about looking for other business opportunities.
Biscuit Making

With the increasing popularity of ice cream there was a need for wafer biscuits and so in 1912 the International Wafer Co was born. In 1928 the now International Biscuit Co (IBC) moved to new purpose built premises in Old Trafford, Manchester. Domenico & his sons Luigi & Romolo ran a rapidly growing business as the post-war demand for biscuits boomed.
"Cones for the Connoisseur"
In 1961, Romolo's three sons Ernest, Roland and Victor left IBC to specialise in making cones for ice cream. These were to be "Cones for the Connoisseur" and so with machines purchased from around the world and IBC, Antonelli Bros Ltd was born. A new factory was built in Eccles, Manchester making wafer buiscuits sugar and wafer cones. In 1963 IBC was dissolved and Romolo became Chairman of the new company.

The UK's first automatic sugar cone machines were installed at Antonelli Brothers in the 1970's to make the famous "Twist" cones that are still made today. The original Antonelli directors believed that there was a good market for cones, not just as a container for ice cream but a tasteful addition to it. In line with this believe the company has continued to invest in new products.
The 1990's saw the retirement of Ernest and Victor, leaving Roland to run the company alone. Shortly after, Roland's sons Mark and David brought their own previous business experience to the Company. Roland retired in 1997 but still remains very much involved in the business that he has given so much to in the last 45 years.
